Guangzhou, China - Here, at the epicenter of the disease known as SARS, dinner can be bought live at a "wet market."

Just outside the banking and commercial center of the capital of Guangdong Province stretches a wide, congested boulevard lined with machine shops, auto parts vendors and industrial parts outlets. Delivery trucks, lumbering buses and darting taxis vie for position.

If you haven't read the entire article, please take the time to do so. It is not only colorful but gives a lot of insight into the sanitary practices and customs of China.

We spent a couple months in Guangzhou. Those pictures are tame compared to what some of the open air markets look like.

Dogs, cats, rabbits, snakes, goats, birds, all lined up in cages, waiting to be slaughtered. Even at many restaurants, there are cages outside, you pick out what you intend to eat, and they slaughter it on the spot.

This sounds primitive but also sounds just like The Lobster Pound up in Kennebunkport.

This is very common in Asian countries, not only in Guangzhou.

The air is almost intolerably redolent of the urine and feces of dozens of species, including that of the human vendors. When the stench can no longer be tolerated, a large power hose is used to wash the filth away, effectively aerosolizing much of the muck into breathable droplets.

Now, there's a lovely thought.

With 700 confirmed cases in Beijing today, you'd have to practically quarantine the whole city. People have been leaving for the past few days.

I think this move is way too late.

This isn't very culturally sensitive.

You are racists if you have a problem with this.
